Padraig McDonnell, Appointed as the New CEO of a Prominent Silicon Valley Corporation

An Irish individual, Padraig McDonnell, a native of Cavan, has been appointed as the incoming CEO and COO of Agilent, a Silicon Valley life sciences giant specializing in pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and clinical markets, with a market value of $40 billion (€37.3 billion). McDonnell will succeed current CEO Mike McMullen and will officially assume his new roles, including joining Agilent’s board, on May 1.

Company chairman Koh Boon Hwee expressed satisfaction with McDonnell’s appointment, stating, “After a thorough succession process, I’m pleased that Padraig McDonnell has been selected as Agilent’s next CEO. This is a clear illustration of the quality and depth of the Agilent team.”

Agilent, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, was spun out from tech giant Hewlett-Packard and achieved the largest initial public offering in Silicon Valley history in 1999, raising $2.1 billion.

McDonnell, aged 52, currently serves as the president of the Agilent CrossLab Group, a position he has held since 2020. He was also appointed as the chief commercial officer in November 2021. Prior to these roles, McDonnell served as vice-president and general manager of Agilent’s chemistries and supplies division from 2017.

McDonnell commenced his career with Agilent’s predecessor, Hewlett-Packard, in 1998 and has accumulated 26 years of experience in the analytical and scientific instrument industry.

Padraig McDonnell, a graduate of Maynooth University with degrees in science and biochemistry, as well as a graduate of St Patrick’s College Cavan, is set to assume the position of CEO and COO of Agilent, a leading Silicon Valley life sciences company with a market capitalization of $40 billion. Agilent, a regular on the Fortune 500 list, reported a net income of $1.24 billion for the full year 2023, with revenue remaining steady at $6.83 billion.

Having been with Agilent since 1998, McDonnell has held various key positions within the company, including President of the Agilent CrossLab Group since 2020 and Chief Commercial Officer since November 2021. His extensive experience in the analytical and scientific instrument industry spans over 26 years.

Agilent’s expansion into Cork in 2018 reflects its commitment to developing cutting-edge technologies for live-cell analysis. McDonnell expressed enthusiasm for Agilent’s future endeavors, highlighting the company’s mission to support customers in advancing scientific breakthroughs.

Chairman Koh Boon Hwee praised McDonnell’s track record of success within Agilent and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the company into the future as its next CEO.
