In the ongoing battle against increasingly sophisticated ransomware attacks, artificial intelligence (AI) is proving crucial, according to CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz. He highlighted the ability of AI to identify new pieces of ransomware without prior exposure, distinguishing it from traditional signature-based technologies. Kurtz emphasized that ransomware attacks are on the rise, with the average cost per event reaching $8.5 million, doubling in just the last month. However, he also noted that cybercriminals are leveraging AI, with tools like “Dark AI” such as FraudGPT allowing attackers to exploit organizations even without extensive in-house knowledge. While AI has become a valuable asset for cybersecurity, it has also become a double-edged sword.

Identity verification was highlighted as a critical component in preventing cybercrime, with Kurtz identifying individuals as the primary weakness in the system. He explained that CrowdStrike’s technology introduces additional identity challenges for adversaries, providing additional hurdles even if credentials have been compromised. This approach aims to buy more time to thwart potential attacks.

The recent adoption of new rules by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), requiring publicly-traded companies to disclose breaches within four days, has led to a reassessment of cybersecurity measures by these companies. Kurtz noted that this regulatory change has contributed to increased business for CrowdStrike, with the company benefiting from the growing recognition of cybersecurity as a critical aspect for all publicly traded firms. These developments are seen as positive “tailwinds” for CrowdStrike’s business, reflecting the broader trend of organizations prioritizing robust cybersecurity measures in the face of evolving threats.
