Dave Cassidy, the former President of Unifor Local 444, has been appointed as a Skilled Trades Special Advisor for the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development in the Ontario government. Cassidy, who announced his retirement in April, will assess workforce needs in the manufacturing and auto industry, including electric vehicles, to ensure the province is well-positioned to respond to the rapid development and expansion of these sectors.

Cassidy had been the head of Local 444 for six years. He is a member of Unifor’s National Executive Board since Unifor was founded and was elected to the National Skilled Trades Council as a Trustee in 2005. Cassidy believes that the province needs more skilled workers to support the growing industries, which will not only build Ontario but also provide a better future for workers and their families. The appointment is part of the PC government’s efforts to attract, train, and protect workers, making Ontario the best place to work, live, and raise a family.

The Ontario government has invested over $1.5 billion in the skilled trades since 2020 through its Skilled Trades Strategy. Cassidy’s unique qualifications and experience make him an ideal candidate for this role, and his appointment is expected to contribute significantly to the province’s efforts to support the growing industries and workforce.

Cassidy has been a very dynamic leader adept in decision-making in challenging situations. He has been a driving force and inspirational figure to many people.
